In this program, you’ll develop talents in writing fiction, poetry, screenplays and creative nonfiction. While studying with faculty members who are skilled writers themselves, you’ll read a wide range of literature and genres, sharpen your critical and verbal skills, better explore the resources and potential of imagination and develop a professional attitude towards writing. Extracurricular activities and a variety of internships available on and off campus will give you valuable experiences for planning both your professional and academic futures. Your verbal and storytelling skills will prepare you for careers in writing, content strategy, brand communications, publishing, TV and film, UX, advertising and public relations.

Do you want to spend a semester interning in Hollywood? Film and Visual Media majors have the opportunity to intern at studios, agencies and production companies — and study directly with working industry professionals — through CMU's Semester in Hollywood program. Back on campus, our community of accomplished screenwriters, filmmakers, film scholars, computational humanities instructors and visual communication researchers gives you a rigorous foundation in how stories are structured, how images shape culture and how to create and critically analyze moving-image work. Skills and experiences in storytelling, visual literacy, audience analysis, and media production translate directly to careers in entertainment, content strategy, documentary filmmaking and user experience (UX).

By combining analytical insight with applied experience, you will learn to adapt your writing to new and emerging contexts, preparing you for diverse careers in writing and communication, as well as for advanced study in fields such as law, medicine, and rhetoric and writing.

This program prepares you to generate clear and effective communication that translates complex scientific and technical information for diverse audiences. Whether your interests span writing and STEM fields, or you want to complement a STEM major with the communication skills industries demand, this program offers an individually tailored path with tracks in technical communication and science and medical communication. You will engage in intensive practice in writing, editing and user-centered design with technical and scientific coursework. This interdisciplinary curriculum positions you for a field defined by ongoing shifts in media, tools and communication practice — with career paths spanning technical writing, scientific communication and UX writing, among others.

Humanities Analytics

As AI and data reshape every industry, the most valuable question isn't can we do this — it's should we, and why. The Humanities Analytics (HumAn) minor trains you to answer both. You'll develop the quantitative fluency and analytical depth to work with data not just technically, but critically — learning to analyze, digitize, question, quantify and visualize the full range of human cultural production: printed books, manuscripts, historical records, fan fiction, art, music and film. Drawing on traditions in philosophy, literature and history, the program prepares you to bring humanistic judgment to data-driven environments and computational tools to humanistic questions — exactly the combination that industries increasingly say they need. Graduates are positioned for any career (technology, law, advocacy, publishing) in which the ability to think across the humanities-technology divide is the competitive edge.
