My Experience Studying Business at CMU
by Angie Y.
Hi, my name is Angie and I just completed my first year studying business administration with an additional major in statistics at Carnegie Mellon!
When I was applying to colleges, the Tepper School of Business really stood out to me for its data-driven process and interdisciplinary nature. Our learning in class integrates conversations that bring in other areas like how technology aids business operations or how the math I am learning will aid in understanding how to optimize profits. My business classes are about more than learning the technical skills I will need, but also how the changing world can impact career paths and how to best prepare myself for that change.
As a Tepper student, you get the opportunity to attend ProTrek trips in your first and second years. Through these trips, you get to travel to multiple businesses and talk to real-world professionals, while also touring their company spaces. During my fall semester, I went on the exploratory trip where we got to talk to professionals working within the business analytics, marketing, finance and consulting fields. My favorite part of the trip was visiting the Pittsburgh Penguins arena, learning what business operations can look like for non-corporate companies and getting a tour of the venue.
Outside of the classroom, I’m currently a consultant for the Undergraduate Consulting Club. My first semester, I was really open to any potential career and any chance to further explore each one. Tepper has 15+ pre-professional organizations that each focus on different aspects of business. It’s a great opportunity to understand different career paths and further refining your skills outside the classroom. As a consultant, I’ve gotten hands-on experience working with real-world clients, conducting market research and delivering insights and recommendations. Not only have I grown immensely as a consultant, but the Undergraduate Consulting Club has also brought a community of friends. The upperclassmen are so willing to find time in their schedules to help with interview preparation or talk about their own experiences, and they are friendly faces I love saying “hi” to across campus. My big has become one of my biggest cheerleaders and helped me grow immensely as a professional. She is always someone I can talk to for hours about anything to catch up on life.
As I prepare for my second year, I’m excited for all the things I will learn in Tepper and the fun I will have within the community here!
