What I Love About Scotty Saturday
by Cindy G.
Hey! I’m Cindy, and I’m a junior studying behavioral economics, public policy and organization with an additional major in creative writing. I’m also part of Kiltie Band (our marching band)’s color guard, so I spent most of my Saturday performing at our school’s football game and exploring Scotty Saturday in the meantime! If you’re not already here, Scotty Saturday isn’t widely advertised, but it’s one of my favorite fall events because it feels like a smaller-scale version of Spring Carnival. Like at Carnival, friends and family get the chance to come up to visit for Family Weekend, which is a particularly special occasion for first-years.
Last year at Scotty Saturday, my friends and I hit all of the games and attractions. We painted pumpkins, managed to beat a puzzle box set up by a local Pittsburgh escape room and challenged each other to mini-golf. I also got a really cozy Scotty Saturday crewneck for only $10! This year, since my friends and I were performing at a football game for most of the day, we explored the row of organizations that were tabling. One of my favorite things about Scotty Saturday is how much free food there is – we picked up kettle corn, strawberry crepes from a food truck and frosted our own cookies at another table. The courtyard also featured an ongoing talent showcase, where we listened to a fellow student sing for a while.
After our lunch break, we rejoined the rest of the Kiltie Band to play for the weekend’s football game and tailgate! Lots of alumni and their families were there to see the Tartans play. As CMU’s marching band, our job was to do an opening show and halftime show and look generally cool (we pride ourselves on our unique uniforms – we’re the “band without pants” that shows up to games wearing kilts and silly hats). We spent some time under the stands doing makeup for our halftime show themed around K-Pop Demon Hunters.
It was a great time! Scotty Saturday is definitely one of the highlights of fall semester for me – whether you and your friends or family like arts and crafts, sports, music or games, there’s always something fun there for you.
