My Experience at SCS Day
by Nandini B.
SCS Day is a day dedicated to celebrating the diverse talents of SCS students, faculty, staff and alumni. It’s one of those events that reminds you how creative and fun the School of Computer Science community really is. The SCS Day theme this year was “Wonderland,” and from the second I got to the University Center, it was clear that people were excited. There was already a huge line wrapping from the entrance by the stairs and around the gym just to get inside and check in for food. It definitely felt like one of the bigger campus events I’ve been to. The night included activities, art, performances and Faculty Feud.
Once I got in, I started by picking up food and my “passport through Wonderland,” which was one of my favorite parts of the event. The passport made everything feel interactive, because you could collect stamps by going around to different stations and activities. It turned the event into something more than just walking around and watching. The Wonderland decorations were everywhere – themed signs, cards and little details that tied everything together. In my photos, you can really see how much effort went into the setup, from the signs to the activity tables and even all our class mascots.
Before the main show started, I spent time exploring some of the activities. There was a paper flower making station and there was also a mini tote bag decorating station, where people were customizing bags with markers and stencils. I liked that these activities made the event feel creative instead of just performance-based. It gave people a chance to make something, hang out and talk while still being part of SCS Day. I also visited the art gallery, which was one of the highlights for me. Seeing artwork made by people in the SCS community was really cool because it showed a different side of computer science students – not just coding, but also creativity and personal expression.
Later in the evening, the event shifted into the talent show. The lineup included singing, piano, dance, a Tetris showcase and even a meteor hammer performance, which made the show feel really varied and entertaining. After that came “Faculty Feud,” which was probably one of the funniest parts of the night. Watching faculty members compete made the event feel even more connected and lighthearted, because it brought students and professors into the same fun space. The energy in the room was great, and it was nice to see how SCS Day was not just about academics, but also about community.
What I liked most about SCS Day was that it brought together so many different parts of CMU’s SCS community in one place. There was free food, themed activities, art, performances and a lot of school spirit. It felt like a genuine celebration of how talented and multidimensional people in SCS are. A lot of the time, computer science can feel intense and focused only on work, so it was refreshing to be at an event that highlighted creativity, humor and community just as much. Overall, it is a fun way to experience SCS outside the classroom.
